The Times Union reported that the market was banning pets — people had brought dogs, cats, ferrets and rats — for sanitary and safety reasons, after a woman was knocked down by a dog. Manager Jennifer Felitte said a dog had also recently lunged at her 14-month-old son while he was eating a bagel, and that the board had debated a ban before but decided action was needed as the market grew. Only working animals would be allowed, signs would be posted at parking lot entrances, and the outdoor rules would now match the indoor market at the Uncle Sam Atrium, where pets were already barred. The market at Hedley Place, 433 River St., had more than 60 vendors and drew about 2,000 people every Saturday.

“The last thing we want is to have anyone bitten or hurt.”

— Jennifer Felitte, market manager, in the Times Union
