A season-opening roundup, datelined Menands, reported that the number of farmers markets in New York had grown from about 250 in 2002 to 320, and surveyed area markets as a more personal alternative to supermarkets. Much of the story focused on the Capital District Regional Market in Menands, but it also covered the Troy Waterfront Farmers Market — at the Troy Dock and Marina, 433 River St., north of the Green Island Bridge, open 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays — where vendors such as Our Farms owner Jenn Ward, Rachel Sandler selling hot sauce, and Chris Kelly selling fair-trade Guatemalan coffee offered unusual products. The accompanying list of area markets included TWFM alongside markets in Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga and Schenectady counties.
“I sold more frozen chickens than I brought. I brought a real live chicken for people to look at.”
— Jenn Ward, owner of Our Farms, in the Times Union
