In a Times Union Food section cover story, freelance writer Caroline Barrett described a late-summer Saturday at the Troy Waterfront Farmers Market with her daughter, her daughter’s friend and the family dog, and the unusual produce she found there: fuzzy edamame ($4 a box), Japanese eggplants ($1 apiece), baby and spicy lettuces, pea shoots ($7 a half pound), dragon tongue beans ($5 a pound) and chicken of the woods mushrooms. She argued that the weeks when summer gives way to fall are the best time to shop a farmers market, and that the best way to learn how to cook something new is to ask the farmer. The package included a guide to new and unusual vegetables and her recipes for Moo Shu Mushrooms, roasted Japanese eggplant with garlic and herbs, and a pea shoot and dragon tongue bean salad.

“It could not have been a finer day to walk through a farmers market.”
