The story reported that New York farmers led the nation in donations to food banks in 2011, giving more than six million pounds of fresh produce through the Farm Bureau’s Harvest for All program as demand at pantries rose. Market manager Monica Kurzejeski said the market’s vendors often give leftover produce to local pantries, and Unity House CEO Chris Burke said those donations gave people living in poverty access to fresh food.
“A lot of the time, food pantries and anytime somebody does a food drive, they tend to go with non-perishable items, canned items, boxed items and stuff like that,” she said. “ … Any time that you can have access to local, fresh vegetables and fruits, that’s always an added bonus.”
Troy-based non-profit Unity House has benefited from the Troy Farmers Market’s generosity in the past, and CEO Chris Burke said those donations provide a unique and important opportunity for those who frequent their food pantry.
