Chris Churchill called TWFM “one of the best things this region has going,” but reported that stores and restaurants on lower River Street said the outdoor market, with streets around Monument Square closed to cars, kept shoppers from reaching them, and he agreed they were right. River Street Beat Shop co-owner Jim Barrett said it was “a real kick in the ass” to have the street blocked on a key day. The column aired whispers, which Churchill called a conspiracy theory, that City Hall ignored the problem because of friction with River Street property owner Sam Judge, who said the market should return to Riverfront Park. The mayor’s office said the market decides its own placement; manager Liz Comitale could not be reached. The column ended with a possible compromise negotiated by barber Jamie Magur: a market “kid zone” on the lower block.
“Everybody’s gotta eat. Everybody’s gotta get a piece of the pie.”
