Troy Farmers Market Spotlight (Troy High News)

This segment by Troy High School journalism students Finn Harkin and Gabriel Bentley, made for teacher Marc Mostransky’s journalism class, aired on Troy High News, the school’s morning newscast, on October 11, 2024. It is shared here with the student team’s permission.

With the outdoor season winding down, two Troy High School journalism students spent a Saturday at the market in early October 2024 to show their classmates what it’s all about. Finn Harkin and Gabriel Bentley interviewed shoppers Bonnie Beaulieu and Pam Downey, who talked about the Belgian waffles and about supporting small business owners; Viana and Miranda of The Dutch Udder, the family-owned ice cream shop, who invited students in to try its rotating lineup of more than 160 flavors; the vendor from The Vermont Spätzle Company, who pointed them to his samples under the big green tent; and market manager Steve Ridler. Gabriel had been coming to the outdoor market with his family for years. The report signs off by reminding Troy High that the market moves indoors at the end of October. It’s student journalism, and we love it.

“They meet the farmers, they meet the makers, they see everything that’s going on, and they just love the feel. … So it’s like somewhere they can shop, but somewhere they can socialize.”

— Steve Ridler, market manager, to Troy High News
