The Times Union covered opening day of the market’s fourth season, on Saturday, May 3, 2003. Because the Troy Marina was being paved, the market opened in a different location, with plans to return to the marina the next weekend and run Saturdays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. through October. Shoppers found worm compost, mango salsa, a strolling guitarist, cider, herbs, cookies, jewelry and focaccia, and a trolley shuttled visitors to the River Street antiques district. Manager Amy Halloran said people increasingly want a relationship with local farmers rather than a “big and impersonal” supermarket. New vendors included Solomon’s Rose of Newburgh, selling preserves. The story also covered the Saratoga Farmers’ Market’s opening day the same morning, with a ribbon-cutting by Mayor Kenneth Klotz at High Rock Park and new vendors and a vendor cookbook.
“It’s a nice way to spend a couple of hours.”
