On the morning the market opened for the first time, The Record reported that River Street merchants, the Arts Alliance and the new Troy Waterfront Farmers Market were holding a celebration along River Street. The market, sponsored by the Regional Farm and Food Project, would be open every Saturday through Oct. 28 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the parking lot at Hedley Park Place, just north of the Green Island Bridge, selling organic and conventionally grown foods, in-season fruits and vegetables, plants, breads, meats and wholesome farm products; the story added that there would be no genetically engineered foods and that each week would bring a free community celebration with a different feature. The continuation on page B3 listed the opening-day program: a 10 a.m. modern dance performance by Sage College graduate Tamara Stevens; remarks by dignitaries including “waterfront farmer’s market president Matt Lindstrom,” Troy Mayor Mark Pattison and Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno; the Pokingbrook Dancers at 11 a.m.; a children’s sing-along with MotherJudge at 11:30; the Pokingbrook Morris Dancers at noon; and gardening clinics, farm and craft demonstrations, a petting zoo and storytelling.

“It’s back to our roots when people of the rural parts of the county came to the city to sell our wares. … It will be family friendly and it will be a good thing for the city of Troy and for the whole region.”

— Troy Mayor Mark Pattison, in The Record
