After the market’s November 2018 community workshop, a Hudson Mohawk Magazine correspondent reported on storeowners on lower River Street. They said the Saturday market blocks the car and foot traffic they depend on, and that they had been promised year after year that it would extend down their block.
Maria Levin of Sawtooth Jewelry Studio said the block’s owners had been asking the market for years to extend down their street. One owner said the setup had “completely devastated our businesses” and that neighbors had closed. The owners asked the market to place some vendors down their block and not to put a physical barricade at River and State streets. Market president Zack Metzger said the market has both good and bad effects on nearby businesses: “They haven’t felt heard by the market, and I’m sad to know that.” The two sides planned to meet again.
