TROY, N.Y. — The Troy Waterfront Farmers Market returned outdoors on Saturday for the first time this season, featuring local vendors, produce and food for both Troy residents and visitors alike.
The streets of downtown Troy were packed Saturday morning, with patrons excited to have the market outdoors as the weather gets warmer. Calvin Powers and Mary Sweeney took their dog Lulu to the market to enjoy the first day of the season, and said there are plenty of food vendors that they gravitate towards.
“La Capital’s breakfast burrito is the best thing I’ve ever had in the world,”

Sweeney said. “We did skip it today because the line’s so long, but highly recommend… Color City Press, their juices, smoothies, everything there, (it’s) one of my favorites as well. The beet juice it’s so good. Even if you don’t like beets, it’s very good.”
Also present at the event was Albany resident Emma Bonhiver. While she moved across the river, she did live in Troy for a few years, and said the farmer’s market is a way to support local businesses.
“I finally have a Saturday off and I just love coming here,” she said. “I love the vibe here. (It’s) very chill, very relaxed. Chaos, but also a lot of fun, and just supporting our local businesses and the farms and all that good stuff.”
“It brings everyone out, because I feel like that everyone’s just all cooped up or doing their usual thing,” Bonhiver added. “It’s nice to bring everyone out here, meet other people, (and) hear other people’s stories sometimes.”
Vendors too were excited that the market was back outdoors. Andy Farmer, who owns Farmer Wines located in West Pawlet, Vermont, said he started his booth at the market last year, and that he loves the city and the people who come out each weekend.
“I really like Troy a lot,” he said. “I spent time here 20 years ago, and then I didn’t spend a lot of time here for a while, so this is a great city. I love the people here, I love the architecture, I like the vibe. It’s a way for us to bring in the products that we grow in the country.”
Fellow vendor Barry Doucette, who owns Snowborn Farm, sold various greens at his booth during the market. He commended the market management on how smoothly the organization goes each weekend.
“It’s really hard to go to a lot of farmers’ markets because you spend your whole day, so actually have to be able to move quite a bit of product, quite honestly, in order to make it worth your time,” he said. “The Troy Farmers Market is one of the markets that allows you to do that, because it has such a good crowd. I can’t say enough good things about the market manager and the assistant manager.”
Theresa Albanese, owner and designer of River Rocks Jewelry & Bead Shop, said the market is also a way to attract new customers. A booth outside her shop featured different natural rocks, as well as crystal jewelry wrapped in ornate wire designs.
“It’s a dramatic benefit for the business for sure,” she said. “The amount of people that come for the farmer’s market, and just the foot traffic that it brings, we end up getting new customers and then most of them will come back.”
Powers said ultimately, the market is a great opportunity to meet new people and enjoy the products the vendors have to offer each weekend.
“We come every time it opens in the summer,” he said. “It brings a lot of people out to enjoy and really be outside together. I think people come from all over for this farmer’s market, and get fresh produce, flowers, and just a nice bite to eat.”
