The market headed outdoors for its 20th season on May 4, 2019, with more than 100 vendors across four downtown blocks. Fifteen new vendors, chosen from 94 applicants, brought products including heritage-breed duck and goose, gluten-free spätzle, Dorper sheep meat, specialty popsicles and lobster rolls. Most of them were placed on Lower River Street, extending the market to State Street, which merchants there had wanted for years. Two distilleries were set up near the Hudson Chatham Winery tasting room, musicians were booked near two music shops, and the Troy YMCA started a Healthy Family Zone.

The story also reported what Project for Public Spaces heard during its 2018 assessment. Its report said “there is real fear among vendors and the public that changing the TWFM will ruin it,” and some public comments complained about congestion or asked for clearer access to storefronts. In response, the market said it would leave slightly more space between vendors while keeping its street-festival layout.

“Best news in four years.”

— River Street Beat Shop owner James Barrett, on the market’s expansion down his block, in Spotlight News
