Pam Abrams made the case for winter market shopping, largely through TWFM’s winter market in the Troy Atrium, which draws 2,000 to 5,000 people a week compared with 10,000 to 15,000 in summer. TWFM vendors including Lovin’ Mama Farm, Jadey’s Cookies and Sweets, Collar City Candles, The Vermont Spatzle Company, Sweet Mama’s Soap and Muddy Trail Jerky described year-round growing in greenhouses and high tunnels and the value of year-round sales, while noting leaner winter income; Lovin’ Mama’s Corinne Hansch said her winter propane bill tops $7,000.
“We’ve seen farmers adapt their winter production by improving crop storage, adding high tunnels, and diversifying their crop production to be successful over the winter months.”
— Steve Ridler, market manager, in the Times Union
